A day at school

From the door to the loop

The rhythm is the same in every grade, so children know what comes next.

  1. 8:15

Step 1: Arrival and morning meeting

A teacher greets each child at the door. The class gathers to say a poem together and hear the day's plan.

  2. 8:45

    Step 2: Recitation and Latin

Memory work, then Latin: chants in the early grades, grammar and translation later on.

  3. 10:00

    Step 3: Math and writing

Math first, when minds are fresh. Writing follows, with a plan and a reader.

  4. 11:45

    Step 4: Lunch and recess

Lunch at the long tables, then time outdoors in all but the worst weather.

  5. 12:45

Step 5: History, science, art and music

Afternoons turn to the long timeline, a notebook of experiments, drawing, singing and an instrument.

  6. 2:45

Step 6: A book read aloud

The last half hour belongs to a book the whole class is reading.

  7. 3:15

    Step 7: Dismissal

Cars pull up in the loop and teachers walk each child to the right one.
